On Rosh Hashanah 2026, a group of Jews smuggled shofarot onto the Temple Mount and, despite police efforts, blew all the required shofar blasts.
It is crucial to recognize that this is likely the first occasion since the Second Temple stood that the shofar has been sounded at Judaism’s holiest site. A resident of the Mount of Olives vividly described the remarkable experience.
On the first day of the holiday, about 50 Jews ascended to the Mount at 7:00 AM, marking the very first moment they were allowed to enter the holy site. Many wore their traditional holiday garb with pride.
They conducted the entire Rosh Hashanah service, which included thirteen essential full-body prostrations known as Histachavuyot. The Torah explicitly commands Jews to prostrate themselves before God solely on the Temple Mount; it is strictly prohibited for a Jew to perform prostrations in prayer at any other location.
Observing this commandment is central to our faith and is expected to be important during the messianic age. Its significance lies in both its historical context and its anticipated revival, when everyone will practice it. This mitzvah connects us to our traditions and shapes our understanding of the world and our responsibilities.
Isaiah 27:13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
“Birkat HaKohanim, the priestly blessing, was performed,” he asserted. “It was inconvenient because the police prohibited us from bringing machzorim, our holiday prayer books, onto the Temple Mount. Furthermore, since it was a holy day, we were not allowed to use our cell phones.”
A few people smuggled printed pages into the site, enabling us to complete the prayers. When it was time to blow the shofar, someone used a small, hand-sized shofar. Its sound was not loud or beautiful, but it was the first time a shofar had been blown at Judaism’s holiest site since the Second Temple’s destruction.
“The police realized what was happening and rushed over to confiscate the shofar, removing the man from the Temple Mount. We continued praying, and another person then played a small shofar for the next section of blasts.”
Once again, the police stormed in, confiscating the shofar and removing the man without hesitation. Undeterred, we continued our prayers, and each time we reached the shofar section, a different individual boldly stepped up to blow a small shofar.
Ultimately, six men were removed from the site, and six tiny shofars were confiscated. Nevertheless, all one hundred required shofar blasts were emphatically sounded. Furthermore, just outside the eastern wall of the Temple Mount, a man stood ready with a larger shofar and a chatzotras (silver Temple trumpet), as he reported.
“We heard the shofar from both sides. Surprisingly, none of the people involved were charged by the police, and all of the shofarot were returned,” he explained the prophetic significance of the event, referencing the Book of Joel.

He boldly blew the trumpets at two major events: the National Religious Broadcasters’ Conference in Tennessee and CPAC in Washington, DC, both attended by Donald Trump. In accordance with a biblical mandate, Josh stood firm and blew the trumpets for the IDF troops as they readied themselves for battle against Hamas in Gaza.
It is important to note that Israeli law guarantees equality and freedom of religion at all holy sites in Israel. However, despite this principle, Jews face significant restrictions at the Temple Mount. Authorities claim that visible demonstrations of Jewish religious practices could incite violence from Palestinians.
Jewish access is limited to only a few hours each day, and they are not allowed to enter at night or on Fridays and Saturdays. Jews are also prohibited from bringing religious or ritual objects onto the site.
