For the first time, scientists detect Antarctica’s ice breaking at the Doomsday Glacier

The Doomsday Glacier is central to a significant discovery beneath Antarctica’s frozen edge.

Scientists have found numerous unique glacial earthquakes at fragile glaciers. These occur when large icebergs break off and overturn in the ocean, crashing into the remaining ice and generating strong vibrations. Unlike standard earthquakes, glacial earthquakes have distinct characteristics.

Scientists use high-frequency waves to detect earthquakes, but glacial earthquakes are difficult to identify since they do not produce these waves. First discovered in Greenland over two decades ago, detecting them in Antarctica, which has the largest ice sheet, is still a significant challenge.

A recent study using seismic instruments in Antarctica detected over 360 significant events from 2010 to 2023, mainly near the Thwaites Glacier, often called the “Doomsday Glacier.” This rapidly changing glacier could significantly affect sea levels if it collapses.

The Thwaites Glacier could raise global sea levels by about 3 meters if it disintegrates, prompting close monitoring by scientists. Recent studies show that around two-thirds of seismic events happen near its floating edge, likely due to large icebergs breaking off and flipping into the ocean.

When icebergs collide with the water, they create shockwaves detectable hundreds of kilometers away. In Greenland, glacial earthquakes happen more often in late summer, unlike those in Antarctica. At Thwaites Glacier, the most active period of earthquakes was from 2018 to 2020.

This spike occurred when the glacier’s ice tongue accelerated toward the ocean, a change observed by satellites. Warmer waters may weaken the ice from below, making it easier for large blocks to break off. However, the precise role of the ocean in this acceleration is still unclear.

Recent findings indicate that ocean conditions significantly affect glacier ice loss over short periods. Understanding the triggers of iceberg calving is vital for glacier stability. Researchers have also detected seismic events near the Pine Island Glacier, a major source of Antarctic ice loss.

Events occurring 60 to 80 kilometers inland are unrelated to iceberg capsizing, and their cause remains unclear. Glacial earthquakes in Antarctica offer insights into how ice breaks, glaciers move, and how they interact with the ocean.

Previously, detecting seismic events in Antarctica relied on global stations that often missed minor quakes. To improve this, researchers installed sensors on the continent. Glacial earthquakes near Thwaites Glacier are significant, as the glacier sits on soft, sloping ground.

This shape allows for a quick retreat if the glacier front is unstable. Between 2018 and 2020, Thwaites’ ice tongue accelerated, which was linked to more iceberg-related earthquakes, highlighting the ocean’s impact on glacier behavior.

Understanding these connections can help researchers identify the hidden forces affecting Antarctica’s ice. The inland cluster at Pine Island Glacier is still a mystery, as its events can’t be attributed to iceberg capsizing and may result from ice cracking or other unknown processes. Continued monitoring is essential to clarify these phenomena.

Recent signals recorded from 2010 to 2023 clearly demonstrate that Antarctica’s glaciers are far more active than previously believed. By analyzing these ice vibrations, scientists are uncovering critical information that was once undetectable.
