The Kharkiv region of Ukraine has experienced three consecutive years of declining crop yields, despite farmers consistently maintaining, or even increasing, their investments in the land. This trend underscores a critical challenge that needs to be addressed.
A local farmer stated that wheat harvests have sharply declined from five to six tons per hectare a decade ago to just three tons today. This trend highlights a significant drop in agricultural productivity.
“The strongest frosts usually occur between 4 and 6 A.M.,” he explained. “This brief period can destroy almost all the blossoms and wipe out the harvest.” In 2025, soil temperatures reached 140 degrees Fahrenheit, with air humidity dropping to 25-30%.

The World Wildlife Fund-Ukraine highlights that planting shelterbelts in mixed forests helps retain soil moisture, prevent erosion, and support biodiversity. In Kharkiv’s Izium area, 43 hectares of trees were planted last June, with plans for another 2.7 hectares by year-end.
