China’s Aircraft Carrier Combat Capability to Counter US and Allies

China has decisively strengthened its maritime power. Last year, its second active aircraft carrier, Shandong, achieved all-weather combat capability. The carrier has successfully completed its final maritime training mission for 2024, underscoring the country’s growing naval prowess.

The carrier has also shortened the deployment time for fighter jets. Reports suggest that the J-35 will likely operate from the Shandong alongside the J-15, similar to the combination of the US F-35 and F/A-18E/F.

Shandong’s all-weather combat capabilities could create more challenges for the West as China seeks to expand its maritime dominance. China currently has the largest naval force in the world by vessel count. Additionally, in early 2024, Chinese fighter jets were seen flying with Russian forces in Alaska, underscoring China’s growing interest in the Arctic.

The Chinese warship’s all-weather combat capability may lead to more future incidents, raising concerns for the US and its allies. Reports suggest that the Shandong carrier has improved readiness for consecutive sorties and can effectively operate in complex weather conditions, enhancing its role in combat operations.

Since entering active service, the Shandong carrier has rapidly integrated into joint operations, enhancing its carrier strike group’s capabilities. In April 2023, while stationed east of Taiwan, the group coordinated with maritime and air forces for air defense, anti-submarine, and other missions, according to Xinhua.

The Shandong aircraft carrier’s crew collaborated with researchers to overcome over 100 operational challenges. In late October 2024, the Liaoning task group conducted its first dual-aircraft-carrier drill with the Shandong during a combat training exercise in the open sea.

The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong recently launched fighter jets in response to a foreign reconnaissance aircraft. Officials did not specify when the incident occurred but stated that the Chinese jets forced the foreign aircraft to retreat. CCTV Video News Agency released footage highlighting the carrier’s capabilities, including firing guns and missiles and the J-15 “Flying Shark” jets taking off.

The Shandong crew’s focus on cross-specialty training has created a diverse group of multi-role-qualified sailors, including leaders, technical specialists, and logistical experts. Experts compare the Shandong to the US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, which was commissioned in 2017.

Despite its advanced design, Ford was declared to have met its “initial operating capability” only in 2022—nearly a decade after its launch. US media cited high maintenance costs and challenges throughout post-delivery testing and trials.
