China is set to unveil four new missiles designed to sink enemy warships at an upcoming military parade, aiming to challenge U.S. naval dominance.
The military parade will take place on September 3 in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of China’s “Victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression” and World War II.
China is rapidly modernizing its military and has developed a significant long-range missile arsenal capable of targeting U.S. forces in the Western Pacific. These missiles are central to China’s anti-access and area denial strategy, aimed at limiting enemy access, particularly in potential conflicts over Taiwan or the South China Sea.
The second rehearsal for the upcoming Chinese military parade, expected to showcase new weapons, took place from Saturday evening to early Sunday morning, according to state media.
Around 40,000 participants were involved, and social media photos showed new missiles labeled YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20 being transported. “YJ” stands for Ying Ji, meaning “Eagle Strike,” referring to a series of Chinese anti-ship missiles launched from ships or aircraft.
An observer of Chinese military developments suggested that the YJ-15 might be a supersonic missile, capable of speeds over 768 miles per hour. The YJ-17 and YJ-19 could be hypersonic missiles, exceeding five times the speed of sound and able to maneuver in flight, making them hard to intercept. The YJ-20 may be a highly maneuverable aeroballistic missile.
The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency indicates that this hypersonic missile can be launched from various platforms and combines aerodynamic maneuvers with ballistic phases to enhance its range. Besides its anti-ship role, these missiles may also effectively conduct land-attack strikes, according to an Australia-based naval analyst.
The introduction of new Chinese anti-ship missiles comes after the U.S. extensively used its missile interceptors to defend Israel from Iranian attacks in June and during Red Sea operations against Houthi threats. U.S. efforts have shown effective interception capabilities, but Chinese missile technologies may be more advanced and supported by larger stockpiles.
China operates a range of anti-ship missiles on various vessels, including smaller boats and larger destroyers. Developing new missile designs makes sense to replace older systems. Additionally, using different missile types can complicate enemy defenses, allowing some to bypass them and strike targets like aircraft carriers.
A Chinese military observer noted that the new missiles reflect China’s assessment of U.S. defense capabilities, indicating a shift away from relying on low-observable technology, or stealth, which makes missiles harder to detect.
The U.S. Navy has advanced air defense sensors on its warships that detect slow-flying, low-observable missiles for interception. Meanwhile, China favors supersonic and hypersonic missiles, which are harder to intercept even if detected.
It remains unclear if China will reveal details about its new anti-ship missiles during the military parade, including payload, speed, range, and launch platforms.
