Why is Baptism Important in Your Walk with Christ

In the Jewish tradition, purification was mandatory before entering God’s presence. Individuals had to be in ritual purity to enter the Temple area.

If someone had been affected by impurity, they had to undergo a ritual purification process before being allowed to re-enter the Temple or perform any work related to it.

The practice of tevilah, similar to baptism, involves the complete immersion of the body in water to eliminate ritual impurity.

Baptism signifies the beginning of a new life in Jesus. It symbolizes dying to oneself, being buried with Christ, and rising as a new person cleansed from impurities.

So baptism signifies the beginning of our new life in Christ, as we bury the old man and rise as a new man in Christ.

Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: like Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so, we also should walk in newness of life.

In the New Testament, John the Baptist firmly preached repentance, leading people to confess their sins and receive full immersion baptism. When Jesus underwent baptism, emerging from the water, the Spirit of God descended upon him.

Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

In Acts, Peter said, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 2:38 Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Through the act of baptism, individuals participate in the death of Jesus Christ,  the crucifixion of their old selves, and their resurrection to a new life in Christ.

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Raised up a new person and have put on Christ.

Galatians 3:27 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

We continue to cleanse our inner selves daily by obeying the truth of the Bible.

Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another with a pure heart fervently:

And we are born again by the word of God, born once in the flesh and a second time in the spirit.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.

We grow as newborn babies with the milk of the word until we become adults in God.

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
