Australian warship followed by Chinese navy accussed of ‘provocative actions’

China’s military has admitted to tracking Australian and Canadian ships, alleging ‘provocative actions’ in the Taiwan Strait.

The Australian destroyer HMAS Brisbane and the Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Québec transited a waterway on Saturday, deemed an international passage by Taiwan.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and claims that the strait is within its territorial waters, a claim that the Taiwanese government disputes. The Eastern Theatre Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) stated that the presence of the ships has constituted “provocative actions.”

The Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command decisively coordinated its naval and air forces to track and monitor the transit of the two vessels, effectively responding to and managing the situation,” declared spokesperson and Army Senior Colonel Shi Yi.

The actions of Canada and Australia have sent incorrect signals and increased security risks. Senior Colonel Yi stated that Chinese troops would remain on high alert. However, an Australian Defence spokesperson countered these claims, asserting that the vessels adhered to international law.

The Royal Australian Navy’s Hobart-class destroyer, HMAS Brisbane, transited the Taiwan Strait with HMCS Ville de Québec from September 6 to 7, 2025, in accordance with international law. HMAS Brisbane is on a four-month Regional Presence Deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australian vessels and aircraft will uphold international law and freedom of navigation per the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Taiwan’s defense ministry is monitoring activities in the strait and has deployed air and naval forces to maintain security and stability.

A spokesperson for Canada’s armed forces did not comment on the details of active ship deployments. Australia claims there is no role for China in Pacific security, but Beijing’s military posturing has intensified. President Xi Jinping recently demonstrated this strength with a large parade in Tiananmen Square, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

In his speech at the parade, President Xi Jinping declared that China would “never be intimidated by bullies,” noting that “the Chinese nation always forges ahead.” The 70-minute parade featured a remarkable display of military strength, with around 10,000 troops from the People’s Liberation Army participating.

President Xi rode in an open-top car along Chang’an Avenue, showcasing thousands of troops and military hardware near Tiananmen Square, including hypersonic missiles and stealth fighter jets. Former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was among the 10,000 attendees, reportedly there in a personal capacity.

The former Victorian Premier took a ‘family photo’ with controversial leaders, including Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, and Masoud Pezeshkian. Former NSW Premier Bob Carr, invited to the event, chose to meet Chinese diplomats instead, later defending his decision in an article for Nine Newspapers.

Andrews defended his decision to accept an invitation, stating that a strong relationship with China, our largest trading partner, is crucial for Australia’s national interest and job support. He valued the opportunity to engage with regional leaders, including former New Zealand Prime Ministers John Key and Helen Clark, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
