Archaeologists are determined to uncover more about The Last Supper by focusing their efforts on finding the exact location of the event in Jerusalem. Their quest has brought them to the “Upper Room” or Cenacle, a two-story house with a red, sloped roof and limestone walls that remain standing to this day.
The Cenacle, situated on Mount Zion in the old city of Jerusalem, is widely believed to be the actual location of the Last Supper. Since the fourth century, numerous artworks have portrayed the Cenacle, emphasizing its profound religious importance. These artistic depictions, alongside historical records, firmly affirm the Upper Room’s pivotal role in Christian history, compelling thousands of visitors to pilgrimage to this sacred site each year.
In accordance with the Bible, Jesus sat with his 12 apostles in the Upper Room and foretold his betrayal and imminent death. He blessed the bread and wine, symbolizing his body and blood, which he declared would be broken and shed for the forgiveness of sins.
Confirming the Cenacle as the exact site of the Last Supper has proven difficult due to the building’s continuous use and religious significance, preventing archaeological digs. Researchers have had to rely on non-invasive methods as a result.
In 1585, a sculpture was found showing Jesus standing before woman who some believe was Mary Magdalene after his resurrection, with the Cenacle behind them. This sculpture supports the idea that the Cenacle was significant in Jesus’ life and ministry.
In 1884, the Madaba Map was discovered in Jordan by Greek Orthodox Christians. This map, created in 560 AD, depicts the Holy Land and includes a building with a red sloped roof in the same location as the Cenacle, suggesting its historical presence during the time of Jesus.
In 1846, a drawing from the sixth century was discovered in Italy. It shows Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey with the Cenacle in the background. This image corresponds with the biblical account of Jesus entering the city to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah, further connecting the site to the Last Supper.
In 2019, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) utilized laser technology and advanced imaging to study the Cenacle, uncovering original features such as the symbols of Agnus Dei and the Lion of Judah. These findings strongly connect the site to King David, emphasizing its significant biblical importance.
Further studies are necessary to verify the Cenacle’s role in the Last Supper, and the IAA is actively documenting and studying the site to confirm its significance. The search for clues about the exact location of the Last Supper is ongoing.
Through the use of new technologies and the excavation of historical artifacts, each discovery brings us closer to gaining a deeper understanding of Jesus Christ’s life.
