Researchers may have found the remains of a first-century synagogue, a significant biblical discovery in recent decades.
The location, long hidden beneath a later building, has been undeniably connected to Jesus’ ministry for centuries through religious texts. Throughout history, spiritual pilgrims and biblical scholars have firmly associated the ancient community of Chorazin, also known as Korazim, with accounts from the New Testament.
The Gospel writings describe Jesus teaching and performing healings in local synagogues and other places of worship. However, they also record his later condemnation of these communities for rejecting his message. Warns, “Woe to you.
Matthew 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Concrete evidence of a synagogue from that era has finally emerged. Recent excavations at Korazim National Park have uncovered findings that will reshape our understanding of the site, which also features impressive basalt remains of a subsequent synagogue constructed around AD 380.
During a re-examination of 20th-century archaeological digs in 2024, a team led by archaeologist Achia Cohen-Tavor made an extraordinary discovery beneath the stone flooring.
After carefully removing several layers of stone, they uncovered massive boulders arranged in a deliberate foundation pattern, along with pottery shards, ancient coins, and cooking vessels from households.
“This is a groundbreaking discovery,” stated Cohen-Tavor with conviction. “Having excavated all over the globe, I can confidently say that this is one of the most significant excavations I have led.” The discovery of ceramic sherds wedged between stones offers a vital clue.
These artefacts, dating back to the first century, firmly correspond to the period when Jesus is believed to have traveled through Galilee. Cohen-Tavor provided clear insights in a video about the excavation: “I cannot establish the exact date when this rock was placed here.
Nevertheless, I can accurately date the pottery and, ideally, any coins discovered between the rocks, along with those found beneath them.” This revelation has undeniably reignited intense discussions among scholars of biblical history.
The ancient stone foundations are undeniable remnants of the synagogue referenced in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus preached. This significant finding clarifies why previous archaeologists overlooked these ancient ruins.
Cohen-Tavor emphasizes that the large basalt blocks were likely misidentified as natural bedrock during the initial excavation in 1905, which instead revealed a later synagogue. Consequently, the older structure was concealed for more than a century.
The 4th-century synagogue, built directly on top of earlier remains, stands as a significant historical structure. Crafted from local black basalt, it features three impressive doorways and is richly adorned with carvings of Jewish symbols.
Among the most noteworthy discoveries at this archaeological site is the “Chair of Moses,” a distinctive stone seat that served as a seat for the reader of the Torah. This type of chair is explicitly referenced in Matthew 23, where Jesus asserts, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.”
The discovery of first-century pottery and coins in Chorazin provides strong evidence of Jewish religious practices during the time when Jesus lived.
