Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has released a statement addressing the company’s dispute with the US Department of War over its AI technology.
Anthropic announced late Thursday that it will not comply with the Pentagon’s ultimatum for full access to its artificial intelligence tool, Claude. The company stated that it cannot relax its restrictions on use in fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance.
Anthropic announced its decision just hours before a Friday deadline set by the Pentagon for compliance. This creates a situation where the AI firm may either secure a last-minute concession from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or risk being excluded from future military contracts.
In the statement, Amodei emphasizes his commitment to maintaining safeguards that prevent the use of its AI products for fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance.
“I believe in the vital role of AI in safeguarding the U.S. and democracies while countering autocratic threats. Therefore, Anthropic has actively deployed our models to the Department of Defense and the intelligence community.”
“However, in a limited number of situations, we believe that AI can actually undermine, rather than uphold, democratic values,” the statement says. “Two such use cases have never been included in our contracts with the Department of War, and we believe they should not be included now.”
“Mass domestic surveillance. We advocate for the lawful use of AI in foreign intelligence and counterintelligence operations. However, employing these systems for widespread domestic surveillance contradicts democratic principles.
“Fully autonomous weapons. Partially autonomous weapons, such as those actively deployed in Ukraine, are crucial for the defense of democracy.
In light of the recent dispute, more than 300 employees from Google and OpenAI have boldly joined together to sign an open letter in strong support of Anthropic’s position.
The letter concludes with the following statement: “We hope our leaders will set aside their differences and unite to continue rejecting the Department of War’s current demands for permission to use our models for domestic mass surveillance and for autonomously killing people without human oversight.”
“Fully autonomous weapons have the potential to be essential for our national defense. However, the current frontier AI systems lack the reliability needed to operate these weapons safely. We will not allow any product that endangers the lives of America’s warfighters and civilians to reach the battlefield.”
The Department of War has stated that it will only contract with AI companies that comply with ‘any lawful use’ and remove the previously mentioned safeguards. “They have threatened to remove us from their systems if we continue to maintain these safeguards.
They have warned that we could be labeled a ‘supply chain risk’—a designation typically applied to U.S. adversaries, never before used against an American company. They also mentioned possibly invoking the Defense Production Act to remove these safeguards.
“Despite these threats, our position remains unchanged: we cannot, in good conscience, agree to their request,” the statement concludes. “We are committed to continuing our efforts to support the national security of the United States.”
“He seeks to control the U.S. military, even at the risk of our nation’s safety. The Department of Defense will adhere to the law and not cater to any for-profit tech company. Anthropic has a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense.”

Revelations 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelations 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelations 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
