Many consequences of climate change are often overlooked in discussions about its impacts.
We have several urgent concerns. Massive lakes are bubbling with methane, ice-rich ground is collapsing, and ‘zombie fires’ are smoldering underground for months as the climate changes.
In the Arctic, temperatures are rising four times faster than the global average, weakening the permafrost. Melting Arctic permafrost, especially in Alaska, Canada, and Siberia, is a poorly understood aspect of climate change.
For years, it has acted as a freezer, trapping soil and harmful organic matter. A major concern is the release of rising levels of carbon and methane gases into the atmosphere.
“Permafrost is like the overlooked relative of ice sheets,” said the director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder.
“It’s hidden beneath vegetation and soil, but it exists and significantly impacts global climate.”
Northern regions of the planet hold around 1,700 billion metric tons of carbon, 51 times the amount released globally in 2019, according to NASA.
Thawing permafrost has triggered severe wildfires in Siberia and underground “zombie fires” that can smolder for months. These fires significantly contribute to the global climate crisis.
Fires can burn the active layer of permafrost, releasing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Once this insulating layer is gone, the permafrost thaws more rapidly, increasing emissions.
Additionally, as warming occurs, dormant microbes in the permafrost may awaken, potentially unleashing ancient diseases. Bacteria from thawing ancient human and animal remains can contaminate groundwater.
A genomics researcher warns that as permafrost melts, society may encounter ancient diseases again, especially as warmer temperatures increase access to Arctic resources and the risk of exposure to these old pathogens.
Thawing permafrost is increasingly altering our topography, particularly in Alaska. Nunapitchuk, a remote community, has been sinking since 1969 and is now being overtaken by marshy wetlands.
“Everywhere is becoming boggy. We used to have grass, but now it’s just a constant waterlogged marsh.” Currently, there is no solution for thawing permafrost.
