Israel retaliated by targeting locations in Lebanon following their accusation that Hezbollah was responsible for a rocket attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 12 children and left 29 children injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a firm commitment that Hezbollah will “pay the price” for the rocket strike on the Golan Heights.
“The problem with this conflict is that deterrence has disappeared. Hezbollah has been accustomed to hitting Israel without consequence,” said Michael Rubin, director of policy analysis at the Middle East Forum. Rubin predicted a war unless Lebanon and the United Nations take greater action to restrain Hezbollah.
Israeli forces have recently conducted limited strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. These strikes are believed to be the start of a larger retaliatory effort by Israel. In response, Hezbollah is taking defensive measures, including evacuating some areas in the southern part of the country and preparing precision-guided missiles.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, supported by Iran, has involved exchanges of fire along their shared border for the past nine months.“If this conflict escalates to all-out war, the destruction could be even greater than what has occurred in Gaza.
It could also involve Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, causing unrest across the Middle East and involving the US. Iran itself may directly intervene. The United Nations has warned of a “catastrophe beyond imagination.”
On October 8th last year, one day after Hamas gunmen stormed out of Gaza, killing about 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 others hostage, Hezbollah joined in by firing at Israeli targets from Lebanon. Hezbollah, also a political party, is the most powerful force in Lebanon.
Like Hamas, Hezbollah is classified as a terrorist organization by many countries, including the UK and the US. Hezbollah, unlike Hamas, has the firepower to seriously threaten Israel. It is believed to have an arsenal of more than 150,000 rockets and missiles, some of which are precision-guided and capable of inflicting heavy damage throughout the country.
The English translation of Hezbollah is the ‘Party of God,’ but it refers to a different God than the one in Christianity – it represents the god of terror. Iran, which denies Israel’s right to exist, supports enemies of the Jewish state. Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, and Saudi Arabia have advised their nationals to leave Lebanon urgently. The UK is advising against all travel to the country and urging Britons to leave.
In 2006, the two sides last went to war. During that conflict, Hezbollah fought Israel to a standstill, but it came with a huge cost to Lebanon and its people. Lebanon currently has no president, only a caretaker government, and is facing a shattered economy. The country is divided by sect and plagued by corruption, leaving its citizens to fend for themselves. Many Lebanese people are exhausted, and the last thing they want is another war.
