Since the appearance of the first organisms, the world has undergone five mass extinction events, referred to as the “Big Five.”
These events resulted in the swift extinction of many species. The leading explanation is the impact of a large asteroid in present-day Mexico, which triggered massive fires and a “nuclear winter” effect, leading to climate changes.
Currently, scientists believe Earth is facing a sixth mass extinction, mainly due to human activities like habitat destruction, overexploitation of species, pollution, and climate change.
The current rate of species extinction is 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal, threatening to eliminate up to a million species in the coming decades, which could have severe consequences for ecosystems and human survival.
One of the main causes of the current mass extinction is habitat destruction by humans for agriculture. When forests are cleared and natural landscapes are converted to urban areas, many species lose their homes. Overexploitation through hunting, fishing, and logging also significantly contributes to this crisis.
Many species are being harvested unsustainably, leading to population declines. Climate change significantly contributes to mass extinction by rapidly altering habitats. Rising temperatures and extreme weather force species to adapt, migrate, or face extinction.
Deforestation, especially in tropical rainforests, significantly contributes to mass extinction as it destroys the habitats of diverse species. Additionally, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, so deforestation also reduces the planet’s capacity to manage this harmful gas.
Rising carbon emissions increase the planet’s temperature and cause ocean acidification, which negatively affects marine life, including corals, mollusks, and some plankton species. Coral reefs, despite being highly biodiverse, are particularly vulnerable in the face of ongoing mass extinction.
Ocean acidification and water pollution are harming coral reefs and causing widespread bleaching. This decline puts many species that depend on the reefs for food and shelter at risk. Amphibians like frogs and salamanders are especially vulnerable due to their sensitivity to habitat loss and pollution.
Invasive species significantly contribute to the current mass extinction. When humans introduce non-native species into new environments, these species often outcompete or harm native ones, leading to declines and extinctions. This can trigger extinction cascades, where the loss of one species causes the extinction of others that rely on it.
Pollinators like bees and butterflies are facing serious population declines due to habitat destruction, pesticide use, and climate change. Since many plants depend on them for reproduction, this decline disrupts ecosystems. The current mass extinction raises important questions about humanity’s responsibility toward other species and the planet.
Humans are the primary cause of the current biodiversity crisis, and we have a moral obligation to protect ecosystems for future generations. Although the situation is serious, there is still hope. Advances in science and technology provide us with new tools to preserve species and ecosystems. However, this requires a global commitment to tackle the root causes of extinction.
