The largest known early world map may have marked the location of Noah’s Ark for nearly 440 years, intriguing explorers and historians.
Created in 1587 by Italian nobleman Urbano Monte, the 10-foot Planisphere features detailed illustrations of continents, mythical creatures, and unexplored lands, including Noah’s Ark on the mountains of Ararat in Turkey, where many believe it still lies hidden.
The detail captured attention because the Bible states in Genesis 8:4 that the Ark rested on the “mountains of Ararat” after the Great Flood.
Genesis 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Some viewers were surprised by how closely an illustration resembles the Durupınar site, which researchers have studied since the 1970s to determine if it is a natural formation or the biblical Ark.
A team recently discovered hidden chambers and tunnels underground using ground-penetrating radar. Monte created a unique map during the Age of Exploration, which placed the Arctic at the center, unlike most 16th-century maps.
The large map consists of 60 hand-drawn sheets that create a nearly 10-foot circular image, featuring illustrations of ships, sea monsters, and mythical creatures, along with notes on distant lands. Historians believe Monte was inspired by a Japanese delegation’s visit to Milan in 1585, which expanded European perspectives.
The original manuscript is at Stanford University’s David Rumsey Map Center, where it has been digitally restored and made available online. It shows Noah’s Ark on the mountains of Ararat, well before modern researchers searched for evidence. According to the Bible, the Ark rested there after a 150-day flood.
Biblical measurements describe the Ark as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, roughly 515 feet by 86 feet by 52 feet. The Durupınar Formation in Turkey, located 18 miles south of Mount Ararat, closely matches these dimensions and has been known for less than a century.
In May 1948, heavy rains and earthquakes uncovered a mysterious formation found by a Kurdish shepherd. This formation is near a mountain peak that some believe resembles Noah’s Ark, which, according to biblical measurements, was about 515 feet long, 86 feet wide, and 52 feet tall.
In 1977, an archaeologist asserted that a boat-shaped formation at the Durupınar site in eastern Turkey was Noah’s Ark. In 2019, the Noah’s Ark Scans team used modern technology to investigate further. This belief that the Ark landed on Mount Ararat has led to debate, with some scientists claiming it’s a natural formation while others suggest it might be extraordinary.
The team at Noah’s Ark Scans believes it has found hidden tunnels mentioned in the Bible. Researcher Andrew Jones used ground-penetrating radar to reveal corridors leading to a central chamber he calls the atrium, linking it to the Bible’s description of the Ark, which had three levels for Noah, his family, and pairs of animals.
“God told Noah to bring the animals aboard the ark for their safety. Jones mentioned to GB News that the underground voids are arranged in a specific pattern. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) examines the soil, and Infrared Thermography (IRT) studies suggest a ship-shaped hull is buried underground.”
