When Borders Fail, Security Follows — Is Terror the Result?

The attack on Iran’s nuclear sites and the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei heighten the risk of terrorist attacks in cities across America.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned that Iranian “sleeper cells” operating within the United States pose a serious threat following Operation Epic Fury, stressing that this danger must be taken “seriously” as the state enhances its security measures.

“In times of war, like a potential conflict with Iran, sleeper cells and lone wolves often emerge,” Abbott stated. Tensions rose after a shooting in Austin early Sunday, where Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal, opened fire near a downtown bar, killing two and injuring 14.

Diagne wore a sweater saying “PROPERTY OF ALLAH” during the attack. Law enforcement reportedly found the flag of Iran and photos of its leaders in his home.

More than 25 years after 9/11, improvements in surveillance and airport security haven’t eliminated the significant threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Experts warn that cities like New York and Washington, D.C., remain particularly vulnerable.

America’s open borders have led to an influx of people from around the world. According to a retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism experience, the likelihood of a terrorist attack on the homeland has increased due to various factors coming together.

The open borders policy from the last Democratic administration has allowed 10 to 20 million undocumented immigrants to enter the country with minimal vetting. A 22-year-old undocumented immigrant from Lebanon was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after he confessed to being a Hezbollah member planning to build a bomb and go to New York City.

A retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism experience called the arrest of eight Tajikistan nationals with ISIS ties, who crossed the southern border illegally, an “enormous red flag.” He expressed concern about the millions of unvetted individuals entering the country since 9/11.

“I will tell you, and I’m not giving anything up by this; it is a bio-chem event for deploying that weaponry. You get the most potential loss of life. You get contamination in an enclosed environment, and it’s achievable,” said a retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism.

“Imagine if Hezbollah were to purchase a nuclear weapon on the black market and detonate it in a harbor. This scenario is terrifying, especially considering the global threat of biological and chemical agents, which has been highlighted by the damage caused by COVID.”

“You’d have a serious event if you set off something like that in a train station or on a train. It’s something that terrorism experts constantly work to prevent and worry about.”

Potential new attack risks should be assessed in a criminal context, considering means, motive, and opportunity. The world has shrunk since 9/11, with drones and widespread internet connectivity reaching previously isolated areas.

Using something like an Elon Musk satellite, you can establish an uplink and get online even from the mountains of the Hindu Kush. If you are still involved in terror activities, you have had significant time to develop AI capabilities since 9/11.

Threats would likely come from the Middle East, where Iran is a threat and is still seeking revenge for the bombing of nuclear sites by America’s B-52 with bunker Buster Bombs, and the most recent strikes killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
