“The Sixth Mass Extinction Is Not a Prediction — It’s Happening Now”

A team from the University of Hawaii suggests in Biological Reviews that we may be entering the early stages of a new mass extinction.

“Denying it ignores the overwhelming data; skepticism is no longer justified.”

A mass extinction happens when about 70% of plant and animal life disappears, threatening global biodiversity and ecosystems.

His study focuses on invertebrates, especially mollusks, and the research team argues that the International Union for Conservation of Nature prioritizes vertebrates such as birds and mammals disproportionately.

“The International Union for Conservation of Nature has evaluated only a tiny fraction of invertebrates, such as insects and crustaceans, which make up 95 percent of animal diversity,” he said.

The study indicates that approximately 7.5% to 13% of species have disappeared since 1500, suggesting that we are heading towards mass extinction.

If we are heading towards the sixth mass extinction, it would be the first caused by humans. The impact of our activities on the environment is so significant that many scientists believe we are now in a new geological epoch.

The Anthropocene refers to the period in which humans have significantly impacted Earth’s geology and ecosystems. Some suggest it began 12,000-15,000 years ago with the advent of agriculture.

Some experts associate The Anthropocene with The Great Acceleration, the remarkable speed of human growth and resource consumption that began after World War II.

In other words, the world our grandparents were born into is entirely different from the world we inhabit today. A significant example of the forthcoming sixth mass extinction is the decline of bees and butterflies worldwide.

The bumblebee population in Europe and North America has declined by over 30% in just one generation, indicating a mass extinction. This decline in bumblebees also has significant implications for humans.

Bees not only produce honey but also pollinate crops like tomatoes and berries. Without them, food production decreases. Additionally, over 450 butterfly species in the US Southwest are disappearing, according to National Geographic.

Butterflies play a vital role in pollinating many plants and flowers, which impacts the food chain and the entire ecosystem. Climate change is primarily responsible for the warmer environments, leading to the decline of bees and butterflies.

The increasing temperatures render the former habitats of these species inhospitable. This does not even consider the excessive use of land and raw materials, which can harm or destroy entire ecosystems.

Human-caused environmental damage is now irreversible. The most concerning aspect is that despite countless initiatives and summits, these issues persist to this day.
