What Happens When the World Runs Out of Freshwater?

The consequences of climate change are steadily diminishing vital resources on our planet.

Ongoing global warming is causing rising sea levels and threatening millions, making our current path unsustainable. One overlooked phenomenon could be the tipping point we cannot ignore.

Many people overlook the importance of nearby lakes, but these bodies of water are vital for the global ecosystem. Unfortunately, one of the most pressing issues we face is the shrinking size of these lakes.

Researchers have been struggling with a significant problem for decades, but recent studies have finally uncovered the reasons behind the alarming decline in global lake numbers. Over the past 30 years, more than half of the world’s most vital lakes and reservoirs have been drying up.

Researchers believe significant changes are occurring in the world’s lakes. While scientists have been aware of these transformations for some time, it has only recently become clear just how difficult the situation is and what has been causing the problem for decades.

A study published revealed that an alarming 53% of the world’s largest lakes have lost some portion of their volume since the 1990s, indicating a widespread trend of drying water sources. The lead author from the Boulder-based research firm, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES), stated, “We would say this is a global pattern of drying.”

He explained that his team’s research revealed water storage levels are declining globally, affecting both arid and humid regions, including Central Asia, the Middle East, the United States, and Africa.

This issue is significant for the two billion people living in the basins of the drying lakes, as reported in a CIRES news release that quoted the study’s authors. To examine global water loss, researchers analyzed over 250,000 satellite images taken from 1992 to 2021.

The study’s authors connected various problems to climate change and unsustainable consumption, but they see potential for positive change. This comprehensive examination of the world’s largest lakes introduces a new method for tracking global water levels, promising to transform water resource management.

“With this new method, we can provide broader insights into global lake level changes,” he noted in a CIRES news release. The study revealed not only new knowledge but also highlighted how much we still don’t know.

“Many of the human and climate change impacts on lake water losses were previously unknown, including the drying up of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan and Lake Mar Chiquita in Argentina,” he stated, according to the CIRES news release.

2 Peter 3:10  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2 Peter 3:11  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Revelations 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Revelations 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
