Terror Sleeper Cell Threat in US has Never Been Higher

The threat posed by sleeper cells in the US is at an all-time high, officials have warned.

President Donald Trump decisively authorized strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, employing 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators—the largest and most powerful conventional bombs in the U.S. arsenal—over the weekend.

On Monday, Iran launched 14 missiles at the US base of Al Udeid near Doha, Qatar. The country also threatened to activate terror “sleeper cells” in the US if attacked. In response, US security measures have increased, with officials noting that the terror threat has “never been higher.”

On Monday, the president referred to the retaliatory strikes as “very weak,” emphasizing that it is now “time for peace.” In a post on Truth Social, President Trump confirmed that Iran had provided the U.S. with a warning about the bombings, which allowed for the evacuation of the base. He also confirmed that no Americans or Qataris were injured in the strikes.

Additional police officers have been deployed outside synagogues and the Israeli consulate in New York City, home to around 1.9 million Jewish residents. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is monitoring the situation in the Middle East and, as a precaution, is increasing resources in Jewish and Israeli areas while coordinating with federal partners.

Extra police are patrolling Jewish and Muslim places of worship in Suffolk County, Long Island. “There are no credible threats to New York,” stated the Governor. “We have increased security for sensitive locations and enhanced cybersecurity.”

In Los Angeles, the Mayor said, where the Jewish population is about 617,000, has also boosted police presence at places of worship and community gathering spaces. Washington, DC, with nearly 60,000 Jews, has pledged to enhance security around Jewish spaces, despite no known threats.

This decision follows the murder of two Israeli Embassy staffers in May. Israel also has consulates in several U.S. cities, including Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

In Montreal, police advised a Jewish school and synagogue to suspend prayers and lessons after a caller threatened to “shoot up” the premises. The threat prompted a swift response from authorities. Research by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has highlighted a rise in anti-Semitic and violent threats on social media.

In the 12 days before Israel’s airstrikes, an average of 28.5 threats were recorded against sites monitored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). After Israel attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 13, threats surged to a record 398, then fell to just under 200 per day until June 17. Researchers observed a shift from harassment to calls for mass violence and genocide against Israelis and Jews.
