Scientists are issuing a clear warning: due to the escalating impacts of climate change, we are on the brink of societal collapse on Earth.
Experts have stated that “much of the very fabric” of life now hangs in the balance after new research indicated fossil fuel emissions at an “all-time high.”
The study, published in the scientific journal BioScience, revealed that scientists felt a “moral duty” to “alert humanity to the growing threats we face.”The study says that among 35 “planetary vital signs,” 25 are currently at record-breaking extremes.
The data clearly demonstrates record-high surface temperatures, escalating ocean acidity, and a significant surge in extreme weather events.
It firmly establishes that we are experiencing an “overshoot,” where human consumption is surpassing the Earth’s capacity to regenerate natural resources.
The study indicated that climate change, alongside the risk of overshoot, may lead to a collapse by heightening the chances of catastrophic risks, such as international conflict, or by causing multiple stresses that could result in system-wide simultaneous failures.
The study clearly states that, based on previous research, by the end of the century, one-third of the world’s population will likely be living outside the biological tolerance of extremes of environmental conditions.
This significant development will mean billions of people will be exposed to temperatures beyond the range that has sustained human life—an average of 11°C to 15°C—for thousands of years.
Scientists conducting the study assert that the “future of humanity hangs in the balance.”
They point out that the COP meetings, reactions from world leaders, and various warnings have only produced “minor headway,” and more action is essential.
