2024 “virtually certain” to be world’s warmest year on record

It is nearly certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record worldwide, according to Europe’s climate change service.

This year has been defined by severe storms and unprecedented heatwaves, firmly linked to rising global temperatures driving increasingly erratic weather patterns.

Climate scientists are confident that 2024 will be the first year temperatures exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, likely shattering the previous record by averaging over 1.55°C. This event will establish a significant milestone in global temperature records.

A graph shows that the average global temperature over the past two years has been significantly higher than usual. The deputy director of the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service stated that this should act as a “catalyst to raise ambition” for the upcoming COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“According to the ERA5 dataset, after 10 months of 2024, it is now almost certain that this year will be the warmest on record and the first to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels,” she stated. The ERA5 dataset incorporates billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft, and weather stations worldwide.

According to the Royal Meteorological Society, this marks the second consecutive year of record-breaking temperatures, as global temperatures in 2023 have neared 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

For the first time since the landmark 2016 Paris Agreement, the 1.5C temperature threshold has been exceeded. During this agreement, 196 countries committed to limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

Human-caused climate change is a significant factor in current weather patterns. This year’s warmer temperatures were also influenced by the El Niño phenomenon, which warms sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. This weather system can occur every two to seven years and lead to record-high temperatures and more extreme conditions.

Just days after Spain experienced its deadliest flooding in modern history due to torrential rainfall, the situation has been directly linked to climate change. This severe weather phenomenon, known as a “cold drop,” is becoming increasingly dangerous. This year, we have witnessed several other significant environmental events.

Severe flooding has affected about 6.6 million people and resulted in nearly 1,500 deaths in West Africa, according to ReliefWeb. Hurricane Helene, the deadliest hurricane in the US since 2005, claimed over 200 lives. Additionally, a heatwave hit the Mediterranean, while flash floods in Nepal caused nearly 250 fatalities.

October 2024 was the second warmest October globally, with temperatures rising to 1.65°C above pre-industrial levels, as reported by C3S. Furthermore, it was the 15th month in 16 months where global average surface air temperatures surpassed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, underscoring a concerning trend in climate change.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
