Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian Ministry of Defence to carry out military exercises involving non-strategic nuclear weapons, also known as tactical nukes, increasing tensions between Moscow and NATO.
According to Russian media, the Ministry has stated that they have initiated preparations for conducting exercises with missile formations of the Southern Military District, as well as naval forces and aviation.
This is being done to increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to carry out combat missions, on the instructions of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
According to a report by RIA, the Ministry is planning to conduct exercises to test the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. However, it is unlikely that these exercises would involve the detonation of a tactical nuclear weapon.
In November 2023, Putin withdrew Russia’s ratification of the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty which prohibited Moscow from testing nuclear bombs. He cited the US’s failure to ratify the treaty as the reason for the withdrawal.
Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that they will be conducting military drills with aviation, naval, and ground forces in response to “provocative statements and threats by individual Western officials” towards Moscow.
In early 2022, Vladimir Putin made a statement that Russia would be ready to use nuclear weapons in the event of any threat to its sovereignty or independence. Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Russian leader reiterated his willingness to deploy nuclear weapons on multiple occasions.
In his state-of-the-nation address last month, he warned the West against deepening their involvement in the Ukraine conflict, citing the risk of nuclear war.
During an interview with Russian state television, Putin was asked about the possibility of using battlefield nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Putin responded that there was no need for such measures.
He expressed confidence that America fully understands the potential dangers of escalation and will prevent a nuclear war.
