Many people are worried about the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some experts argue that AI is already conscious like humans.
A Google engineer claimed last year that LaMDA AI, a collection of large conversational language models developed by Google, was conscious.
In a document, dozens of academics from respected institutions have warned that AI systems’ computing power and capabilities are accelerating at a pace that exceeds the progress made in understanding their capabilities and “alignment” with human values.
According to a recent paper by 19 computer scientists, neuroscientists, and philosophers, we should prepare for conscious AI. The sentient, non-human intelligence idea is not as far-fetched as many might imagine.
“Their warning should be taken seriously.”
A professional who specializes in AI and machine learning declined to answer this question. He emphasized that the key factor in determining consciousness is that it is subjective and involves having experiences from one’s own perspective.
“Something which sees itself as an individual agent, with personal experiences, in a world that they can operate on, and which contains other agents.”
The possibility of AI systems becoming god-like is both thrilling and humbling as our conscious experience evolves.
A conscious AI with the ability to make its own decisions without any human input is a thought that will probably concern many readers, and for good reason.
