Rising global temperatures cause melting ice to dilute salty ocean water, preventing it from sinking. If this process stops, it could weaken the Gulf Stream and disrupt global weather patterns.

Research from the University of Copenhagen published earlier this year found that a collapse could occur any time from 2025 onwards.

This shift might result in widespread drought and famine, contributing to a substantial rise in climate refugees and increasing geopolitical tensions.

Scientists in the U.S. warn that a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could lead to significant additional sea-level rise, posing a threat to vulnerable low-lying areas along the Atlantic coast, including cities like New York and Miami. Furthermore, the researchers suggest that the changes in weather patterns resulting from this collapse could disrupt marine ecosystems and fisheries.
