A geological study from over a decade ago found evidence of an earthquake in ancient Israel around the time of Jesus’s crucifixion.
A 2012 study in the International Geology Review supports the biblical account of an earthquake occurring right after Jesus’s death.
Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 27, states that darkness covered the land from midday for three hours while Jesus was on the cross.
At about 3:00 p.m., Jesus cried out, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” meaning “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Soon after, He cried out again and gave up His spirit.
“The temple curtain was torn in two, the earth shook, and the rocks split. Tombs opened, and many saints who had died were raised. After His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.”
Matthew wrote, “When the centurion and those with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake…” A study in the International Geology Review found that a seismic event matching this account occurred between 26 and 36 A.D.
They exclaimed, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” A post on social media X noted, “Science confirms the Bible’s accuracy. Historians suggest that Jesus was likely executed on Friday, April 3, A.D. 33.”
Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Matthew 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Matthew 27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
Pontius Pilate, the fifth governor of Judea, presided over Jesus’s trial and sentenced him to death, with the crucifixion believed to have occurred around 33 AD. A study also found that scientists discovered bent and disturbed sediment layers beneath the Dead Sea.
Researchers believe that ancient earthquakes along the fault line caused the area’s distortions. By examining sediment layers at Ein Gedi near the Dead Sea, they reconstructed Earth’s history, revealing periods of drought and other climate conditions.
Historical records by the Jewish historian Josephus note famine and drought in Judea during the same period, supporting sedimentary evidence.
Scientists used this timeline to identify the earthquake that likely occurred around the time of Jesus’s crucifixion, with estimates placing it between 26 and 36 AD.
