The legend of a sacred religious artifact dating back to Moses’ time has captured the attention of people worldwide for thousands of years, including Hollywood and scholars who have studied the stories surrounding the Ark of the Covenant.
The Ark of the Covenant gained worldwide fame due to its role in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.” However, its origins date back several thousand years to the Old Testament, where it is described that ancient Israelites carried the Ark into battle and used its great power to decimate entire cities.
The Ark of the Covenant, as described in the Bible, is a box made from acacia wood and covered in gold. It measures approximately 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet high. It was carried using wooden poles that were connected to golden rings on its sides.
The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred chest built by the Israelites according to the exact specifications given by God. The contents of the Ark included the tablets with the Ten Commandments that the Lord gave to Moses, a jar of manna as a reminder of the bread provided by the Lord in the wilderness after the Israelites fled Egypt and Aaron’s rod.
On the surface of the Ark, two angels faced each other with their wings extended, creating a seat for God. The Ark was a significant foreshadowing of Jesus Christ as the only place of atonement for sins. The Ark’s power was so great that it had to be completely covered with a veil when transported and never touched by any human.
The Ark is in the Old Testament, particularly in the first five books of the Bible. It was securely housed in a sacred chamber beneath the Temple of Jerusalem. Following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in the 6th century BCE, the Ark mysteriously vanished. Many believe it was smuggled out of the city to a safe location before Nebuchadnezzar’s forces could steal it.
To this day, its whereabouts remain a mystery. One theory is that the Ark was taken to Egypt after being captured by a pharaoh who invaded Jerusalem. Others believe divine intervention allowed the Israelites to escape with the Ark intact. Other theories are the Ark was taken by the Babylonians.
Another theory is that the Ark’s current whereabouts are in Ethiopia, and an Ethiopian prince took the sacred container back to his homeland. Each year, the festival of St Mary of Zion takes place in the city of Aksum, otherwise known as the City of the Covenant.
According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, the Ark of the Covenant was brought to their land shortly after Jerusalem was sacked in the 6th century BCE. To this day, it is said to be stored under Our Lady Mary of Zion’s Church, and it is off-limits to everyone.
