Researchers have created innovative materials that can reshape themselves, similar to living tissues, allowing them to flow like liquid and harden into a steel-like form.
Combining robotic ensembles with machine learning could create remarkable capabilities in robotic materials, impact areas like active matter in physics and collective behavior in biology, and turn science fiction into reality.
Unlike traditional materials that are permanently set once formed, these robotic materials can remarkably transition between rigid and fluid-like states on demand.
The science fiction film in question is “Terminator.” The second movie sends a T-800 model Terminator back in time. This Terminator takes on the appearance of a police officer and can alter its form, such as transforming its arm into a steel blade.
This innovation can create structures that can change shape and function autonomously without external forces. This advancement could revolutionize industries such as manufacturing, construction, and medicine.
A former doctoral researcher at UCSB stated, “We’ve found a way for robots to behave more like a material.” His team has developed a collective of small, disk-shaped robots that can assemble into various formations and adjust their mechanical properties, similar to how living cells change during development.
A key challenge in designing these systems is creating strong and adaptable materials. While traditional processes like molding and forging use external heat and pressure, robotic materials must be internally powered and actively controlled to switch between rigid and flowing states. According to a UCSB mechanical engineering professor, “They need to maintain a shape while also selectively flowing into new forms.”
This innovation is inspired by embryonic development, as living tissues can self-organize, self-heal, and regulate mechanical strength. A physicist, formerly at UCSB and now at TU Dresden, has studied how embryos shape themselves, noting that “living embryonic tissues are the ultimate smart materials.”
His research revealed that developing cells can switch between solid and fluid-like states to form an embryo. This transformation involves three key mechanisms: active forces moving the cells, biochemical signaling coordinating their movements, and cell adhesion shaping the tissue.
The research team developed a robotic system featuring eight motorized gears on each robot. This allows movement in tight spaces, similar to cellular motion. Instead of biochemical signals, the robots use polarized light sensors to determine their movement direction.
The polarization indicates how to rotate their gears, enabling the entire system to change shape collectively. To replicate cell adhesion, the robots utilize controllable magnets that allow them to stick together or separate as needed. This adhesion makes the robotic material strong when necessary while allowing for fluid-like rearrangement.
