Engineers have designed a 36-mile spacecraft, Chrysalis, to carry 2,400 passengers to Alpha Centauri, the closest star system.
A chrysalis is defined as the pupa stage of a butterfly, during which the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.
We are supposed to change just as the caterpillar becomes a butterfly.

As reported by Live Science, this ambitious vision recently earned the team the top prize at the Project Hyperion Design Competition, launched last year by an international consortium of scientists, engineers, and urban planners.
Chrysalis appears to be a concept from a sci-fi novel. This habitat creates Earth-like gravity by rotating on its axis and consists of onion-like layers that include living spaces, gardens, warehouses, food production areas, ecosystems, and communal spaces.
Each shell is powered by nuclear fusion reactors, a technology not yet practical on Earth. Chrysalis has multiple stages, each a fully autonomous habitat, with the innermost layer designed for plants, microbes, livestock, and food production mechanisms.
Different environments, such as tropical and boreal forests, support biodiversity. The structure has three layers: the second layer includes communal spaces, and the third features “3D-printed dwelling modules.”
The outer layer serves as a warehouse for equipment. A “Cosmos Dome,” 426 feet tall and 1,180 feet in diameter, provides a controlled, zero-gravity environment with thermal insulation and protection from deep space radiation.
Chrysalis is a generational spaceship that enables inhabitants to observe the universe while floating in weightlessness. Through the dome’s transparent panels, they can gaze at the cosmos behind them.
The ship aims to give male and female inhabitants a three-year window, between ages 28 and 31, for reproduction. Each inhabitant is limited to two children, regardless of partner. The goal is to maintain a stable population of about 1,500 individuals over three generations.
Artificial intelligence will help enhance the social system’s resilience, improve knowledge transfer across generations, and deepen understanding of the Chrysalis spaceship complex’s dynamics.
While “Chrysalis” presents an intriguing vision of a multi-generational journey to another star system, it remains firmly in the realm of science fiction.
Achieving practical nuclear fusion and constructing massive structures in zero gravity are challenges far beyond our current capabilities. We also have yet to fully explore artificial gravity using centrifuges.
