Scientists have been left shocked and worried by a recent discovery made beneath the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, otherwise known as the “doomsday glacier.”
The massive amount of ice has been destabilized since the 1990s.
Researchers at the site found deep cracks forming on the shelf, which helps keep the glacier in one piece.
Scientists sent a robot deep down into the icy surface to better understand what was happening with the glacier and see how bad things were.
The device, named ‘Icefin’, bored down around 2,000ft and took a collection of photos and video. It wasn’t great news, with fears growing that the melting rate could lead to its collapse.
If it were to melt completely, it would raise sea levels by more than 2 feet around the globe and could unleash more water if neighboring glaciers are disturbed.
According to the United Nations, more than 40 percent of the world’s human population lives within 60 miles of the coastal areas that rising tides will hit hard.
New research carried out at the location in West Antarctica shows that deeper cracks are beginning to form on the shelf of the glacier, potentially compromising its integrity.
Oregon State University ice researcher, who didn’t work on the study, believes the findings cause concern.
“Thwaites is a rapidly changing system, much more rapidly changing than when we started this work five years ago and ever since we were in the field three years ago. I am definitely expecting the rapid change to continue and accelerate over the next few years.”
