Disturbing new Finding in Human Blood Samples: ‘Imperative to declare a Global Emergency’

Researchers are warning about the health risks of microplastics and questioning the slow response from governments despite growing evidence.

Recent studies have conclusively identified tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics and nanoplastics, in nearly 80% of human blood samples. These particles are present in every tested tissue and placenta, highlighting a pervasive contamination issue.

A recent study published in the journal Nature Reviews Cardiology revealed that patients with plastic fragments lodged in their carotid arteries are at a significantly higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. “It is imperative to declare a global emergency.”

These particles are causing health issues throughout the body, raising urgent medical concerns. Since the 2015 Microbead-Free Waters Act, U.S. regulation has stagnated, with federal agencies conducting studies but failing to establish exposure standards for consumer products or air pollution.

Global plastic production is projected to double by 2030, resulting in a significant increase in the volume of microplastics that impact our oceans and health. As plastics break down into micro- and nano-particles, they can cross cell membranes and the blood-brain barrier, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Doctors warn that microplastics have become a serious medical crisis, not just an environmental issue. This connection between environmental and human health underscores the need for regulations on microplastics in preventive medicine.

Although some private clinics offer treatments to remove microplastics from the blood, these options remain largely inaccessible to most people. This solution decisively shifts costs away from polluters and onto patients.

Without immediate national action, the health burden will only escalate, particularly for those who cannot afford experimental treatments. Some states are already taking action despite the lack of federal regulations.

California has become the first state to require microplastic testing in drinking water. Meanwhile, lawmakers in six other states are considering legislation that would require microfiber filters in new washing machines to address microplastic pollution, following France’s lead.

Experts believe prevention is safer, cheaper, and fairer than treatment. They recommend establishing a national drinking water standard for microplastics, closing loopholes for products like glitter, requiring source-control technology in appliances, and funding national biomonitoring efforts for substances like lead and PFAS.
