A study indicates that the world’s oceans are facing a triple threat due to planetary crises.
The EU Copernicus Ocean State Report clearly highlights three major threats to our oceans: escalating pollution, the rapid impacts of climate change, and the concerning decline of biodiversity.
Each one has the power to significantly impact society and the planet.
“It is crucial to understand how and why the ocean is changing to protect its essential role in sustaining life and livelihoods,” said the director of Copernicus Ocean State Report activities at Mercator Ocean International.

The three threats to the ocean each present distinct problems that are interconnected and can exacerbate the issues caused by the others. As the ocean warms, it becomes more acidic, which, in turn, can further accelerate the warming of the water.
The ocean is a delicate ecosystem, and chemical changes can damage marine life. Furthermore, warmer water leads to more intense storms and erratic weather patterns.
Much like warming waters, pollution poses a significant threat to marine life. Fish and other aquatic creatures can become entangled in plastic waste or mistake it for food, resulting in death from nutrient deprivation.
Ocean biodiversity is under serious threat from multiple sources, and additional factors are further accelerating its loss.
These threats profoundly impact land-based communities. As ocean temperatures rise and biodiversity declines, the challenges for fishing intensify, and coastal cities become increasingly vulnerable to the relentless rise in sea levels.
