A professor from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences noted, “The ocean’s record-breaking phenomena have created a troubling pattern.”Arctic sea ice likely reached its lowest annual maximum extent of 14.33 million square kilometers, a decline of over 95 percent in the oldest and thickest ice since the 1980s.
Most remaining ice is younger and thinner, making it more vulnerable to melting. Arctic temperatures have risen at more than double the global average since 2006. Large areas of the Arctic that have been frozen for thousands of years are now thawing. The frozen soils in Alaska, Canada, and Siberia hold hundreds of billions of tons of carbon.
When permafrost melts, microbes decompose carbon, releasing greenhouse gases. In 2023, global methane levels reached a record 1,922 parts per billion, making it 28 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over a century and 80 times more potent over 20 years. Since 2020, methane emissions have consistently exceeded estimates.
Scientists are examining the rapid increase in atmospheric methane, which is now over 2.5 times higher than pre-industrial levels. Global temperatures have also risen by more than 0.4 degrees Celsius over the past two years, reaching 1.6 degrees Celsius in August 2024, compared with the early 1900s.
The projected global temperature for 2023-2025 is expected to be 1.5 degrees Celsius above the 1880-1920 average, a critical threshold from the Paris Agreement. The past 11 years have been the hottest on record, driven by rapid ocean warming and intense marine heatwaves.
This poses threats to ecosystems and increases the risk of extreme weather. From 2011 to 2023, Earth’s energy imbalance rose to 0.96 watts per square meter, up from 0.79 watts per square meter between 2006 and 2018. This metric is key to understanding climate change.
The energy imbalance indicates the excess energy the Earth absorbs from the sun compared to what it radiates back into space. While forests and soils have historically absorbed carbon emissions, their effectiveness is declining.
In 2023, tree-cover loss from fires reached a record high, with tropical primary forest fires increasing by 370 percent, leading to higher emissions and biodiversity loss. Weakened by droughts and high temperatures, forests are now more vulnerable to fires and diseases.
