Humans are exceeding the safe limits of the planet, breaching another critical boundary of the Earth’s systems.
A new report indicates that ocean acidification has reached critical levels for the first time, primarily due to the absorption of CO₂, which lowers the water’s pH.
The 2025 Planetary Health Check, released by the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), warns that seven of the nine crucial Earth system boundaries have now been breached, an increase of one boundary from the previous year.
The institution attributes the “stark new development” to fossil fuel burning, deforestation, and land use changes, asserting that this undermines the ocean’s role as Earth’s stabilizer.
“The ocean is becoming more acidic, oxygen levels are dropping, and marine heatwaves are increasing,” says co-lead of the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab. “These changes are putting stress on a system vital for stabilizing Earth’s conditions.”
Ocean acidification is primarily caused by climate change. This process, along with warming and deoxygenation, impacts a wide range of ecosystems, from coastal fisheries to the open ocean.
The consequences of ocean acidification will have far-reaching effects, influencing issues such as food insecurity, global climate stability, and human well-being.
Since the beginning of the industrial era, the pH of the ocean’s surface has decreased by approximately 0.1 units, representing a 30- to 40-percent increase in acidity. This change has already led to observable shell damage in pteropods, which are tiny sea snails.
Although this may not seem significant, these organisms are a crucial food source for numerous species. Experts warn that their decline can disrupt entire food chains. Currently, acidification serves as a glaring warning sign for the stability of Earth.
“The ocean is the life-support system of our planet,” says a renowned oceanographer and Planetary Guardian. “Without healthy seas, there can be no healthy planet. For billions of years, the ocean has been Earth’s great stabilizer, generating oxygen, shaping the climate, and supporting a diverse array of life.”
Acidification is a “flashing red warning light on the dashboard of Earth’s stability”. Ignore it, and we risk collapsing the very foundation of our living world. Protect the ocean, and we protect ourselves.
Planetary Boundaries Science launched in 2023 to address critical gaps in our understanding and monitoring of the Earth’s system.
It established nine boundaries that must remain within safe limits to ensure the safety of humanity and the resilience of the natural world. Scientists monitor these boundaries, akin to a doctor’s health check, to assess the planet’s condition.
The factors include:
1. **Climate Change**: This refers to a long-term shift in Earth’s temperature and weather patterns.
2. **Biosphere Integrity**: This reflects the overall health, functioning, and resilience of Earth’s living systems.
3. **Land System Change**: This involves changes resulting from human-driven activities, such as agriculture.
4. **Freshwater Use**: The consumption and management of freshwater resources.
5. **Biogeochemical Flows**: The cycles of chemical elements and compounds in the ecosystem.
6. **Novel Entities**: These are new substances introduced into the environment, such as synthetic chemicals or microplastics.
7. **Ocean Acidification**: The process by which oceans become more acidic due to increased carbon dioxide levels.
8. **Ozone Depletion**: The thinning of the Earth’s protective ozone layer.
9. **Aerosol Loading**: The presence of air pollutants in the atmosphere.
These factors collectively impact the health of the environment and ecosystem.
The latest report reveals that only two boundaries stand firm within the realm of safety: the levels of aerosols in the atmosphere and the integrity of the stratospheric ozone layer.
