NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) report that thawing is happening decades earlier than expected, with temperatures in Siberia, Alaska, and northern Canada rising over 3°C since the 1980s.

This significant increase in temperature is hastening the degradation of permafrost. The rapid thawing of permafrost directly results from global warming and contributes to a cycle that worsens climate change.

According to the International Permafrost Association, Arctic permafrost is a vast carbon reservoir containing approximately 1,500 billion tons of carbon, nearly double the amount in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The thawing of permafrost releases ancient carbon that has been locked away for thousands of years. As it decomposes, it emits carbon dioxide and methane, significantly contributing to the greenhouse effect and increasing global warming.

The release of carbon from permafrost is a critical turning point in the fight against climate change. When permafrost thaws, particularly in waterlogged areas, methane, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 84 times greater than carbon dioxide over 20 years, is released.

This increase accelerates global warming and complicates climate stabilization. Melting permafrost creates thermokarst, which is unstable ground prone to sinkholes and infrastructure collapse.

The thawing of permafrost endangers Arctic communities, particularly in Alaska and Siberia, by threatening infrastructure like roads and buildings. A 2023 University of Alaska Fairbanks report indicates that over 45% of northern Alaska’s infrastructure could be severely affected.

Melting permafrost can expose dormant bacteria and viruses, creating public health risks. In 2016, a thawed reindeer carcass in Siberia released anthrax spores, infecting many and resulting in a child’s death.

This highlights the danger of unknown pathogens emerging as permafrost thaws. Scientists warn that ancient microorganisms could resurface, posing new global health challenges. This threat extends beyond the Arctic, impacting worldwide health and safety.

Thawing permafrost contributes to a climate feedback loop, releasing greenhouse gases that further increase temperatures. It also alters soil chemistry, releasing nitrogen and mercury and transforming boreal forests into wetlands and shrublands.

The self-reinforcing cycle poses a major challenge to climate stabilization efforts. Arctic Indigenous groups are facing significant disruptions as permafrost melts, leading to the loss of traditional hunting grounds, food storage areas, and sacred sites.
