Coral reefs support about 6 million fishers in nearly 100 countries, providing vital food and protein for coastal communities.
Coral reefs could provide 162 million additional fish servings per country each year, showing their potential to feed millions of people.
Coral reefs are essential for food security for hundreds of millions of people around the world. A recent study has found that more than half of the world’s coral reefs are currently bleached due to ocean warming.
Dubbed the “Third Global Bleaching Event,” scientists reported that their findings from 2014 to 2017 show the impacts of ocean warming on coral reefs. If that was between 2014 and 2017, how much more is it today, since the oceans have warmed every year since then?
Hosea 4:1 The LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Analyzing data from over 15,000 reefs globally, a team of scientists found that 51% of the world’s reefs suffered from “moderate or worse bleaching,” while 15% experienced “significant mortality” over a three-year period.
“Ocean warming is leading to more frequent, extensive, and severe coral bleaching and mortality,” an oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated in a report published on February 10.
“The extensive bleaching and heat stress stretches across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, NOAA reported.
During this event, heat stress levels have exceeded those observed previously. As a result, NOAA has developed more extreme Bleaching Alert levels that are now being utilized in the ongoing Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event.
“Currently, reefs are facing an even more intense Fourth Event, which began in early 2023. The Pacific coastline of Panama has experienced significant heat stress and coral mortality,” stated the corresponding author from the College of Science and Engineering at James Cook University.
In recent years, bleaching has been consistently reported across multiple locations, including Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, and islands in the South Pacific, according to NOAA.
Furthermore, coral reefs are definitely experiencing die-offs in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Tanzania, Seychelles, and Indonesia. This alarming trend demands immediate attention and action.
Coral reefs act as natural barriers against waves, storms, and flooding, preventing loss of life, property damage, and erosion. They also support communities through tourism, food security, and biodiversity.
A study published in the summer of 2023 reveals that 1 in 3 species in the world’s oceans inhabit coral reefs. This includes nearly as many microscopic organisms as all those previously identified on Earth.
Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
