NASA Withholding New Images of Mysterious Object From Beyond Solar System

Last month, interstellar object 3I/ATLAS came within 18 million miles of Mars during its unusual trajectory through our solar system.

As it approached, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter used its HiRISE camera to capture high-resolution images of the rare visitor, widely believed by experts to be a comet.

Due to a complicated bureaucracy caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown, which began just days after the images were taken, scientists have still not seen them over a month later.

Last week, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) urged interim NASA Administrator Sean Duffy to release images that offer three times the resolution of those taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in July.

“This information is crucial for improving our understanding of interstellar visitors and their interactions with our solar system,” she wrote.

“The brightest pixel in these images will give us the most accurate estimate of the object’s size so far.”

Duffy acknowledged her request, though the outcome may not satisfy astronomers. “I had a productive conversation with NASA about 3I/ATLAS,” she tweeted.

“They will release images and data as soon as the government reopens.”“Unfortunately, bureaucratic reasons prevent the release of the images for now,” Luna wrote.

Fortunately, while we wait, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who is helping Luna, noted in a blog post that the MRO is not the only spacecraft photographing the intriguing object.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) released images of a rock taken by its Tianwen-1 Mars Orbiter, which came within 18,000 miles of 3I/ATLAS.

“The HiRIC images show the nucleus and its surrounding coma, which spans several thousand kilometers,” said Loeb, referring to the glowing gas and dust around a comet’s core.

A high-resolution image of 3I/ATLAS could help us more accurately estimate the size of its nucleus. Loeb’s calculations suggest it may be “anomalously massive,” with a solid-density nucleus larger than 3.1 miles and a mass over 33 billion tons.

In addition to being the third confirmed interstellar object to pass through the solar system, 3I/ATLAS has exhibited surprising behavior that Loeb has been carefully documenting.

Images taken on November 5 by the R. Naves Observatory in Spain show that comet 3I/ATLAS lacks a tail, which is highly unusual for a comet that has recently passed its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion.

Loeb stated in a separate blog post that, based on momentum conservation, he derived that the mass fraction lost during the perihelion passage of 3I/ATLAS is greater than 13 percent.

“For a typical comet, this process should have led to the formation of a large coma filled with dust and gas. This material would be pushed by solar radiation pressure and the solar wind, resulting in a cometary tail that points away from the Sun.”

“No tail is visible in the new images from November 5, 2025,” he said. Whether these findings support Loeb’s controversial theory that 3I/ATLAS is a relic from an extraterrestrial civilization sent toward our solar system is still to be determined.
