Methuselah microbes can stay dormant in soil and frozen animals for thousands of years. Scientists worry that ancient diseases might infect humans with the warming climate and thawing permafrost.
Thawing permafrost may release ancient bacteria and viruses frozen for millennia. Scientists have known for over a decade that these microorganisms could still infect living organisms.
In 2014, scientists successfully isolated viruses from the Siberian permafrost, proving that these ancient viruses could still infect living cells even after being frozen for thousands of years.
In 2023, researchers revived an amoeba virus that had been preserved for many years, demonstrating the resilience of these long-dormant pathogens.
The risks associated with dormant pathogens extend beyond permafrost regions; they can also be present in large ice formations such as glaciers. Last year, scientists discovered 1,700 ancient viruses hidden deep within a glacier in western China, many of which had never been observed before.
These viruses are safe while buried in permafrost, but climate scientists worry they may soon be released. When permafrost melts or is disturbed, harmful microbes can enter the environment. Scientists have discovered influenza strains in frozen victims’ lungs dating back to 1918.
Remarkably, the virus remained infectious even after being frozen for many years. For instance, researchers identified an ancient relative of the African swine fever virus, known as Pacmanvirus lupus, while examining the intestines of a thawed Siberian wolf.
Scientists estimate that four sextillion cells—four followed by 21 zeros—escape permafrost annually. Although only one in 100 ancient pathogens may disrupt the ecosystem, many microbes increase the risk of a dangerous incident.
In 2016, anthrax spores were released from a 75-year-old frozen animal carcass in Siberia, leading to dozens of hospitalizations and one child’s death. A significant concern is that the disease could establish itself in the animal population, increasing the chance of transmission to humans.
Researchers indicate that approximately three-quarters of all known human infections, including those found in the Arctic, are zoonotic. If a zoonotic disease were to emerge from a dormant state in the frozen Arctic, our bodies might lack the defenses needed to combat the infection.
This type of infection could lead to a dangerous and hard-to-control pandemic. As the Arctic warms more quickly than other regions, melting permafrost and changing ecosystems may increase the spread of infectious diseases between animals and humans.
Researchers warn that the Arctic’s weak medical infrastructure poses significant risks for pandemics. Limited health and research services allow diseases to spread quickly, often before authorities can respond.
Notably, zoonotic diseases like Hantavirus hemorrhagic fever and Toxoplasma gondii are increasingly present in the region.
