India has announced the successful test firing of an intermediate-range ballistic missile that can carry a nuclear warhead deep into Chinese territory.
India’s defense ministry announced the successful test-firing of the “Agni-5” missile from a range in Chandipur, located in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The ministry stated that the launch validated all operational and technical parameters.
With a range of over 5,000 km, this missile can target nearly all of China. The Agni-5 is one of several indigenously developed ballistic missiles with short and medium ranges by India.
The test takes place as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gears up for his long-awaited visit to China, marking a significant moment in the improved relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Relations between India and China, two of Asia’s most powerful nations, took a significant downturn in 2020 due to a deadly border clash. However, this year, their ties have strengthened in response to the increasing tariff pressures imposed by US President Donald Trump.
India and China have decisively agreed to resume direct commercial flights and issue tourist visas. Furthermore, Beijing has taken the critical step of reopening two pilgrimage sites in western Tibet for Indian travelers.
This week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a significant visit to India to meet with Prime Minister Modi, underscoring the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
“Stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China are essential for ensuring regional and global peace and prosperity,” declared the Indian Prime Minister following his meeting with the top Chinese diplomat on Tuesday.
India is fully capable of striking targets throughout neighboring nuclear-powered Pakistan, its arch-rival that it has confronted in multiple wars since both nations achieved independence from Britain in 1947.
New Delhi and Islamabad successfully averted an all-out war in May after experiencing their most intense military escalation in decades. This conflict led to the tragic deaths of dozens of civilians due to cross-border shelling and drone attacks from both sides.
The Agni-5 missile, which conducted its inaugural flight test in April 2012, has been rigorously tested multiple times since then, consistently integrating advanced technology.
The last trial of Agni-5 occurred in March of last year, featuring Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which enables it to hit multiple targets with a single launch.
The US, the UK, France, China, and Russia are leading powers that actively deploy MIRV missiles. Additionally, Pakistan successfully tested this technology in 2017, as reported by the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, a prominent advocacy group based in Washington.
The Indian MIRV missile, a powerful innovation of the country’s Defence Research and Development Organisation, showcases India’s advancement in military technology. Developed initially by the United States in the 1970s, MIRV technology decisively enhances strategic capabilities by saturating and overwhelming enemy defenses with multiple warheads.
