What does holiness mean according to the Bible?

Isaiah had an awe-inspiring vision of the absolute holiness of God.

Isaiah 6:1 I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

Isaiah 6:2 Above it stood the seraphims:: each one had six wings; with twain, he covered his face, and with twain, he covered his feet, and with twain, he did fly.

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

In Revelations, it’s described this way.

Revelations 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

They cried out Holy, holy, holy, day and night. Not just once Holy, but Holy, holy, holy describing the breadth and depth of the Holiness of God.

When you are in the presence of the almighty God, you can only describe it one way, Holy, holy, holy.

Holiness is God’s nature. The word translated as “holiness” in the New Testament means to be “set apart.” In the Old Testament, holiness was generally connected with God’s perfection.

How can we set ourselves apart and achieve perfection?

1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Words are important to God since he is the word, and our words are likewise important to God. Words we speak are so important that we will be judged by every word that comes from our mouths.

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

The word “essence” represents the most significant element, quality, or aspect of a thing or person. It distills what truly matters. When we say something is the essence, we say it’s of utmost importance.

“The essence of holiness is the truth, which is love.”

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love suffereth long, love is kind; love is not jealous; love does not brag, love is not pride,

1 Corinthians 13:5  Love doth not behave itself unseemly,  love seeketh not her own, love is not easily provoked, love thinketh no evil;

1 Corinthians 13:6  Love rejoiceth not in iniquity, but love rejoiceth in the truth;

1 Corinthians 13:7  Love beareth all things, love believeth all things, love hopeth all things, love endureth all things.

1 Corinthians 13:8   Love never faileth:

Only through the Holy Spirit, which God gives to His children, can we grasp the holiness of God.

1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so, the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which is God’s.

“Holiness is an absolute requirement for anyone who seeks to see the Lord.”

Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Our God is Holy and he instructs us to be Holy.

We must become a partaker of his divine nature.

2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. God’s holiness.

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 8:32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
