Switzerland’s glaciers have undergone significant melting this year, with a three percent decrease in total volume, marking the fourth-largest annual decline on record.
Renowned Swiss glaciologists have revealed a staggering loss tied to the effects of global warming, shedding light on an urgent environmental crisis.
According to a recent report from the Swiss glacier monitoring group GLAMOS and the Swiss Academy of Sciences, Switzerland’s ice mass—home to most of Europe’s glaciers—has shrunk by one-quarter over the past decade.
“Glacial melting in Switzerland was once again enormous in 2025,” the scientists stated. “A winter with low snow depth combined with heat waves in June and August led to a loss of 3 per cent of the glacier volume.”
Switzerland, which is home to nearly 1,400 glaciers—the most in Europe—faces significant implications from this gradual melting for hydropower, tourism, farming, and water resources across many European countries.
According to experts, more than 1,000 small glaciers in Switzerland have already vanished, a poignant reminder of the changing climate and its impact on our world.
The teams clearly indicated that a winter with minimal snowfall was followed by heatwaves in June, marking the second warmest on record. As a result, snow reserves were significantly depleted by early July.
Ice masses are melting earlier than ever before. “There is no doubt that glaciers are retreating as a direct result of human-induced global warming,” stated the head of GLAMOS, emphasizing the undeniable impact of climate change.
This is the primary reason behind the acceleration observed over the past two years,” stated a glaciologist at ETH Zurich. The shrinkage is now the fourth-largest, following those in 2003, 2022, and 2023.
