Today, leading experts are meeting to reset the Doomsday Clock, a stark symbol of scientific concerns about humanity’s potential fate.

The “Doomsday Clock,” a symbol of humanity’s proximity to self-destruction, was moved to 85 seconds to midnight on Tuesday, marking its closest position to catastrophe since its introduction nearly 80 years ago.

The risks humanity faces from nuclear weapons, climate change, and disruptive technologies are increasing. Every second counts, and we are running out of time.

Last year, the Bulletin adjusted the Doomsday Clock to a striking 89 seconds to midnight, underscoring its closest approach to the ominous hour in history.

The concept behind the clock is quite simple yet profound: as the hands approach midnight, it symbolizes the increasing urgency of our situation regarding the end. The closer we are to this metaphorical midnight, the nearer we are to potentially catastrophic consequences for our planet.

Behind the clock stands the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit organization that plays a vital role in global security. Their experts—specialists in nuclear technology, climate change, and various other critical fields—collaborate with Nobel laureates to decisively adjust the hands of the clock.

Typically, the Doomsday Clock is set in mid-January every few years. This timing reflects how recent events have shifted humanity’s fate since the last adjustment. When the clock was first established in 1947, the primary concern was the escalating danger of nuclear weapons in the aftermath of World War II.

Some things remain constant. In recent years, fears of nuclear attacks, World War III, and artificial intelligence have caused the clock’s hands to move forward. In 2021, for instance, the board determined that we are 100 seconds from annihilation.

They based this on the responses of world leaders to the coronavirus pandemic, the public’s declining faith in democracy and science, and climate change, among other concerning issues.

Last year, the clock was set at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been. The year 2024 presented significant challenges, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, and new leaders taking office around the world.

It’s not a celebratory New Year’s Eve countdown. It’s more of a metaphor to say humankind has failed to avert catastrophe. Such disasters are told of in the Bible as clear signs of the return of Jesus and when the end of the world will happen.
