Germany’s Foreign Office has firmly accused the Chinese military of deliberately targeting one of its aircraft with a laser during a European Union operation.
The aircraft participated in Operation ASPIDES, a European Union initiative aimed at enhancing maritime security to protect international shipping in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Gulf from Houthi attacks.
“Endangering German personnel and disrupting operations is unacceptable,” the Foreign Office declared in a July 8 post on X, previously known as Twitter. “Today, we summoned the Chinese ambassador to the Federal Foreign Office to address this serious issue.”
Amid growing concerns about China’s influence on technology and security in Europe, up to 700 German armed forces personnel are involved in an EU-led operation in the Red Sea. This mission is aimed at preparing for potential Houthi attacks on key trade routes and follows Germany’s extension of its participation in January.
In addition to Germany, the mission includes Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Earlier this year, the U.S. conducted a bombing campaign against the Houthis to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
According to the paper, China targeted a German reconnaissance aircraft off the coast of Yemen, although it did not specify the aircraft’s model. This incident occurred as the plane was approaching a Chinese frigate.
The extent of the possible damage is still unclear and is currently under investigation, according to the report. Another German outlet, Tagesschau, stated that an unidentified Chinese warship directed a laser at the aircraft.
Additionally, China’s defense ministry confirmed its military presence in the area on June 10. The 47th Naval Escort Task Force is currently in the Gulf of Aden, where it is conducting underway replenishment (UNREP).
During this process, fuel, munitions, and supplies are transferred from one ship to another. The statement specifically mentioned the supply ship Gaoyouhu and the guided-missile destroyer Baotou.
The Chinese ambassador has been summoned to Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, creating heightened anticipation about the impending diplomatic fallout from Berlin’s unconfirmed claims against Beijing.
Germany’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday that it has summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest after a Chinese warship used a laser against a German military aircraft in the Red Sea.
The maritime surveillance aircraft was part of the EU mission Aspides, which is intended to better defend civilian ships against attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
It was lasered earlier this month “without any reason or prior contact” by a Chinese warship that had been encountered several times in the area, the German Defence Ministry said.
The ministry said that as a precaution, the aircraft’s mission was aborted. It landed safely at a base in Djibouti, and the crew is in good health, it said.
The aircraft has since resumed its operations with the EU mission in the Red Sea. China’s spokespeople have not immediately commented. The EU mission only defends civilian vessels and does not take part in any military strikes.
The southern part of the Red Sea is deemed a high-risk zone. On Tuesday, Yemen’s Houthi rebels continued an attack targeting a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea, authorities said, after the group claimed to have sunk another vessel in an assault that threatens to renew combat across the vital waterway.
