Category 6 is the New Hurricane Normal, Scientists Warn

Did you think Category 5 was the worst hurricane? After devastating Jamaica and Cuba, Hurricane Melissa prompts some scientists to suggest we’ve entered the age of Category 6 hurricanes.

Experts warn that storms fueled by human-caused climate change are stronger, intensifying rapidly, and moving faster. These storms produce destructive winds that can tear off roofs and flood coastal areas with ocean water, which can linger for days after the storm passes.

Hurricanes are now surpassing the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale, which measures damage potential up to 157 miles per hour. Since 2013, five tropical cyclones would have been classified as Category 6 hurricanes if that category existed.

Experts believe that the current 5-point hurricane scale may no longer suffice, and Hurricane Melissa supports this view. The Category 5 storm, Jamaica’s worst on record, approached Category 6 levels, a University of Pennsylvania climatologist said.

A hurricane could reach sustained winds of 192 miles per hour, causing damage beyond Category 5 limits. He noted in an email that post-season analysis might revise estimates to exceed the “Category 6” threshold, indicating that these powerful storms are becoming the new norm and may require reclassification.

The Chief Scientist of The Nature Conservancy stated, “It no longer makes sense to limit the Saffir-Simpson scale to 5. Adding a Category 6 would recognize the growing impact of climate change on hurricanes and the increased risk of damage from more severe storms.”

She suggests that the Saffir-Simpson scale may need a complete revision to consider precipitation, which plays a significant role in hurricane-related economic impacts. “The debate over adding a Category 6 overlooks the fact that flooding damage is often an equally significant concern.”

Not all scientists believe a Category 6 is needed on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. A Colorado State University meteorologist stated that an uninhabitable situation lasting weeks or months is already extremely severe. This scale has been in use for decades, according to a director at Georgia Tech University.

“If we change the criteria, it will be difficult to compare new storms to historical ones without reanalyzing past data, which would redefine a ‘major’ hurricane.” A meteorologist said, “I’m neutral on this, but we need a way to identify significant storms if these events keep happening.”

Climate change is making intense storms like Hurricane Melissa more likely. According to a study from Imperial College London, human-induced climate change increased the likelihood of Melissa by four times and raised its wind speed by 11 miles per hour.

Warming ocean temperatures are strengthening hurricanes, according to a Climate Central meteorologist. For Hurricane Melissa, rising temperatures increased its intensity by 10 mph, resulting in a maximum sustained wind speed of 185 mph. “These storms are reaching the upper limits of the Saffir-Simpson scale,” he noted.

To tackle climate change, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the fossil fuel industry. A 1.3 degrees Celsius increase in temperature since pre-industrial times has led to more intense hurricanes.
