Archaeologists and theologians are collaborating to investigate recent discoveries about the ancient city of Sodom, referenced in the Old Testament book of Genesis.
Tall el-Hammam’s sudden disappearance thousands of years ago has remained a mystery to archaeologists. In the city’s ruins, there are no signs of an extended military siege or conflict. But other signs point to a different catastrophe from the sky, the outlet reported.
The marks of extreme heat were left on pottery fragments, human skeletal remains, and other artifacts. This type of heat damage could be from an exploding above the city, similar to Genesis 19:24-25.
Genesis 19:24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
Genesis 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
An archaeologist said that the physical evidence from Tall el-Hammam and neighboring sites indicates a highly destructive concussive and thermal event, as one might expect from what is described in Genesis 19.
A paper published in 2021 supports the theory that the event over the ancient city was “much larger in force than the Tunguska event.” The bomb dropped on Hiroshima had a measured 15 kilotons of energy, the blast equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT.
The damage from the Tunguska event was measured at 5 megatons, or 5 million tons of TNT, according to the paper. Using a supercomputer to analyze data from the site, the paper’s authors have suggested the destructive force at Tall el-Hammam was at least in the 15-megaton range, equivalent to 15 million tons of TNT.
Genesis 19:27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:
Genesis 19:28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
The high-energy airburst also appears to have generated large amounts of salt, a phenomenon that hearkens back to the Genesis 19 account of Lot’s wife being turned into a pillar of salt, the paper said.
“The salt was thrown up due to the high impact pressures,” an emeritus professor of earth science at the University of California told the outlet. “And it may be that the impact partially hit the Dead Sea, which is rich in salt.”
Genesis 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
They used the scriptures as clues to locate the city, focusing their search on the Jordan River Valley.
“The proper question to ask in the location of Sodom is, Where was Lot standing when he lifted his eyes and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well-watered?” It was Bethel and Ai,” he explained.
You can read about Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 18:16, 19:29 in the Bible.
Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Romans 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Romans 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Romans 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served themselves more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Romans 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Romans 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Romans 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
