Research shows that the Greenland Ice Sheet significantly contributes to global sea level rise. During an expedition, scientists monitored a drilling rig from a tent, examining layers that had existed for thousands of years.

The GreenDrill initiative highlighted a small margin for error in their measurements. A climate geochemist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory noted that their observations appear inconsistent, suggesting that changes are occurring faster than models predict.

Recent drilling at Prudhoe Dome in northern Greenland revealed evidence that the area was ice-free during a past warm period. This suggests that Greenland’s entire ice sheet melted more recently than previously thought, exposing dry, rocky tundra in the northwest.

Past ice sheet collapses happened at lower carbon dioxide levels than today, suggesting we are now in a critical zone for ice loss. This “carbon freezer” contains nearly twice the carbon currently in the atmosphere, and research shows that emissions from thawing ground have significantly increased since 1984.

Thawing ground releases more carbon dioxide and methane, intensifying global warming.
