Archaeologists unearthed these nails, which could be the ones used to crucify Jesus Christ. What makes this discovery even more significant is the ancient bone found embedded inside the nails.
The bone, which is believed to be from the crucified victim, provides valuable insight into the historical event that has had a profound impact on billions of people around the world.
In 1990, during the excavation of high priest Caiaphas’ tomb, two Roman-era iron nails were found. Caiaphas was known for his involvement in the killing of Jesus.
The two nails are from the tomb of the high priest who handed Jesus over to Pontius Pilate.
One of the nails was found inside Caiaphas’ tomb in an ossuary, while the other was found on the ground nearby.
“I certainly do not want to say that these nails are from the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth,” said Shimron. “But are they nails from a crucifixion? Very likely, yes.”
Contrary to the popular notion, the nails that held Jesus to the cross would have been made of heavy, probably square, iron material, 7-9 inches long.
The nails were first driven through small wooden pieces to eliminate any chance of the heads pulling through the flesh.
The site of the incision in the arm was critical; the Romans had perfected the procedure, a very specific procedure.
Jesus would have been made to lie with his back on the ground and his arms stretched out so that the soldiers could nail through his lower forearm or wrist into the wooden cross-beam.
The next stage involved the nailing of the feet; this was also a deliberate action.
The third nail had to be driven through both feet, which were turned outward so the nail could be hammered inside the Achilles tendon.
His knees slightly flexed; Jesus was now crucified. He had to support His weight with the muscles of His legs.
The method the Romans had perfected ensured that crucifixion victims would push up and down to get their breath until they finally suffocated.
Psalms 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.
Luke 22:33 And when they have come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God.
