According to the WHO’s chief scientist, dengue fever will pose a major threat in certain regions of the Southern United States, Southern Europe, and Africa in the coming decade.
Conditions created by higher temperatures may lead to the spread of mosquitoes carrying the disease, which has been a long-standing issue in many parts of Asia and Latin America.
Since 2000, the incidence of this disease has increased eight times due to factors such as higher temperatures, human mobility, and urbanization.
4.2 million cases were reported worldwide in 2022, but public health officials warn that virus transmission is expected to reach almost record levels this year with many cases remaining unregistered.
Bangladesh is facing the worst epidemic in its history, which has led to the loss of over a thousand lives. An infectious disease specialist who recently joined the World Health Organization highlighted the need for countries to get ready for future challenges in many large cities. “It is essential to prepare countries for the additional pressure that will come in the future,” he said.
According to him, the infection is likely to spread and become endemic in certain areas of the United States, Europe, and Africa due to an increase in temperature. The increase in temperature makes more regions of the world suitable for disease-carrying mosquitoes to thrive.
He warned that this will put serious pressure on hospital systems in many countries. Dengue is transmitted by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which behave differently than mosquitoes that transmit malaria.
For instance, they bite people in enclosed spaces and bite throughout the day, not just at night. They also breed in very shallow water. Most people with dengue do not have symptoms, which means that the number of cases is believed to be much higher than reported.
In those who exhibit symptoms, they may experience high temperature, muscle aches, and severe joint pain, which is commonly referred to as “breakbone fever.”
