Researchers working in high-containment research labs must have felt a sinking feeling last Friday when the CDC released its report.
New data reveals that America experiences a surprisingly large number of leaks in its top virus labs every year, causing concerns that the next pandemic may be triggered by one of these incidents. As a result, there have been calls to reduce the number of experiments conducted in these scientific facilities.
Over 600 “controlled” pathogen releases occurred from 2014 to 2022, including viruses like anthrax, Ebola, and tuberculosis. Two lab workers were infected.
Two employees contracted infections on the job. One contracted Chikungunya, a virus spread by mosquitoes, while the other contracted Q fever, a bacterial infection. No deaths were reported. These incidents can be attributed to various factors, such as accidents involving test tubes, incorrect use of safety equipment, and animal bites or scratches that resulted in exposure to diseases and viruses.
These incidents increase the chances of viruses or diseases spreading to the broader community. Such releases can trigger the next pandemic. Inadequate practices, such as discarding infected monkey blood into a sink, are other ways in which deadly pathogens can be released.
Experts warn that continuing virus experiments could increase the risk of release events. The Federal Select Agents Program (FSAP) compiled data that supports this. The Covid-19 pandemic’s suspected lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology fuels these concerns.
A Chinese lab researched coronaviruses, while from Rutgers University found a high frequency of release events in the US.
In 2018, they reported to Congress that safety lapses occur at US laboratories researching hazardous pathogens like Ebola and anthrax. These lapses pose serious risks to human, animal, and plant health.
A release event is when a pathogen like a virus escapes its primary containment area, such as test tubes or ventilation areas. Limited information exists about lab leaks due to potential national security risks.
In September 2016, a student at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis unknowingly got infected with the chikungunya virus after being pricked by a needle that was contaminated with the virus. The student suffered from fever, body aches, and chills and later tested positive for the virus at a hospital.
In 2018, there was an accidental anthrax leak at Fort Detrick, Maryland due to a storm that caused flooding in a boiler room and nearby river.
A disease named ‘Vietnamese timebomb fever’ was inadvertently leaked in Louisiana in 2015 when monkeys who lived in a colony near the laboratory started to test positive for the virus.
Smallpox virus vials were found in 2014 in an FDA cold room instead of the secure storage area.
