US finalizing authorization for Ukraine to strike deep into Russia

The White House is in the process of finalizing a plan to lift some restrictions on the use of US weapons by Ukraine. The confidential discussions focus on the potential expansion of the Russian territory that Ukraine could target using American and British weapons.

This decision, made in consultation with Washington, London, and Kyiv, aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and thwart any further Russian aggression. The deliberations also center around authorizing British missiles equipped with American components for potential strikes against Russia.

Before, the White House was hesitant to expand Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons due to concerns about escalating the conflict with Moscow. However, in recent days, the issue has become more pressing due to Iran supplying ballistic missiles to Russia.

The decision to lift the remaining restrictions will likely be determined at a meeting between US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, set for next Friday. Despite calls from Kyiv and other European countries, senior US officials have staunchly resisted lifting all restrictions on the use of donated US weapons in Russia for several months.

In May, the Biden administration allowed Ukraine to use some weapons against Russia but banned the use of long-range missiles. The rationale for maintaining the remaining restrictions has varied between not wanting to escalate tensions with Moscow and the fact that Russia has moved many expensive targets out of Ukraine’s striking range.

US officials have noted that the stockpile of Army Tactical Missile Systems is limited and approaching a point of concern as the Army is no longer purchasing them. Lockheed Martin still produces hundreds of missiles annually for sale to allied nations.

The Precision Strike Missile is just starting to enter service, and there are not enough of them yet to fully replace the current missiles. Ukraine receives long-range missiles from the UK, US, and France, but strikes inside Russia are still prohibited. According to White House spokesperson John Kirby, the US continues to hold private talks with Ukraine on the issue.

Some fear Russia may use nuclear weapons in response, as they have threatened. The UK has approved Ukraine’s use of long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles to target Russian locations. This was reported by European Pravda, citing UK government sources.

The decision to deploy Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russian targets was reportedly made in private and is unlikely to be made public. Without this decision, the joint visit to Kyiv by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wouldn’t have happened.
