Trump signs order to combat antisemitism on campuses

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to deport foreign national college students and resident aliens who participated in pro-Hamas protests after the massacre of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of over 250 hostages.

A document outlining the proposed order stated that the Department of Justice (DOJ) was instructed to prosecute “terrorist threats, arson, vandalism, and violence against American Jews” while allocating resources to combat the rising antisemitism on campuses and streets since October 7. Trump warned resident aliens involved in pro-jihadist protests, “Come 2025, we will find you and deport you.”

I will swiftly cancel the student visas of all individuals who support Hamas on college campuses, which have become heavily influenced by radicalism. Trump signed the order later on Wednesday, fulfilling a campaign promise to combat antisemitism.

“These attacks have sparked an unprecedented wave of anti-Semitic discrimination, vandalism, and violence against our citizens, especially in schools and on campuses. Jewish students face ongoing discrimination, including denied access to facilities and threats of intimidation and violence,” Trump wrote.

The order requires all federal agencies, including the Department of Education, to submit reports within 60 days on pending administrative complaints against higher education institutions for civil rights violations related to campus anti-Semitism after October 7, 2023. It also permits these institutions to monitor and report activities involving foreign students and staff, allowing for investigations and potential removal of individuals if necessary.

An Israeli assistant professor at Columbia University has been barred from the school for three months for opposing the protests. He views President Trump’s executive order as necessary, stating, “As long as it targets individuals who broke the law—regardless of ethnicity or gender—and guarantees due process in court, I see no problem.”

After Hamas committed atrocities against Israeli civilians, students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison chanted, “Glory to the martyrs of Hamas.” Cornell Professor Russell Rickford labeled the killings “exhilarating.”

Pro-Hamas protests erupted on campuses nationwide, causing damage and resulting in numerous arrests, particularly at Ivy League schools like Columbia and Harvard. A Jewish student from Columbia later sued the university for not ensuring a safe environment.

A class action lawsuit claims that Columbia University has become unsafe for Jewish students to receive their promised education. In December, the FBI arrested a George Mason University student for allegedly planning an attack on the Israeli consulate in New York City.

Trump’s order references the House Antisemitism Staff Report, which found that universities nationwide have violated the civil rights of Jewish individuals in response to anti-Israel protests. Multiple congressional committees, including Education and Workforce, Energy and Commerce, and Judiciary led this initiative.

After a seven-month investigation, lawmakers concluded that U.S. colleges failed to address antisemitism on campus and recommended increased oversight from the Department of Education and other agencies.

“This failure is unacceptable and ends today,” Trump said.
