On July 22, the authorities in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, took a firm stand by passing a resolution that explicitly refers to the Lord as the “Creator and King of all Glory” and urges citizens to embrace prayer as they see fit.
The city commissioners have supported a Tennessee state resolution that designates July as a month of prayer and fasting. The Tennessee House and Senate recently approved House Joint Resolution 803, and the governor signed it into law, which is quite a remarkable achievement given the current debates surrounding the separation of church and state.
The Mt. Juliet resolution aligns with the state’s efforts. The resolution asserts that God, as the Creator and King of all Glory, can judge and bless nations or states. Mt. Juliet District 1 Commissioner Ray Justice emphasized the crucial role of prayer and thanksgiving as he explained that the resolution was unanimously adopted.
“I believe that prayer is important every day, several times a day. In the divisive world we live in, it should be done as often as possible. However, these are my personal inclinations and beliefs.”
“During the July 22 meeting, Mt. Juliet Mayor James Maness explained why he brought the state resolution to the city, highlighting its importance. He mentioned that the resolution calls for prayer and fasting in the state.”
It addresses several issues that the state of Tennessee is asking its citizens to pray and fast about if they are willing. This resolution simply expresses our support for that request.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist activist group based in Madison, Wisconsin, reportedly wrote a letter opposing the Mt. Juliet resolution. “Religious proclamations, particularly those with references to Jesus Christ and a Christian lord, are unnecessarily divisive,” they continued.
“If these counties do not rescind their own proclamations because we represent atheists and agnostics who want equality, and if the government is unable to provide that, we will have to consider the next steps.”
